"Under this flag, may God guide and prosper all the peoples of the NT." With these words, NT Administrator John England marked the moment 40 years ago today when the Territory finally achieved self-government. After a tough few years after Cyclone Tracy and endless negotiations the day had arrived. Around 6000 people gathered at the oval for speeches, a performance from the army band, a 17 gun salute, a RAAF fly-over and plenty of waving of the new flag.
